What is a subclass 482 visa? This visa lets skilled workers live and work in Australia for up to four years, depending on their occupation and the employer’s needs.

If you want to apply for a subclass 482 temporary skill shortage visa, you must first be nominated by an approved business. The business must lodge a valid nomination application with the Department of Home Affairs before you can apply for the visa.

The subclass 482 visa has three streams.

Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (subclass 482) short-term stream

Short-term stream is for lower-skilled occupations that are listed on the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL). You can stay in Australia for up to two years on this stream.

Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (subclass 482) medium-term stream

Medium-term stream is for medium-skilled occupations that are listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). You can stay in Australia for up to four years on this stream.

Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (subclass 482) labour agreement stream

Labour agreement stream is for occupations that are listed on a labour agreement between the Australian government and your employer. You can stay in Australia for the period of time specified in your labour agreement.

Once you have been granted a subclass 482 visa, you can:

  • Work in Australia in your nominated occupation for your sponsoring employer;
  • Bring family members with you to Australia on this visa (if they meet the eligibility requirements);
  • Travel to and from Australia as often as you want during the validity period of your visa;
  • Apply for permanent residency in Australia through the subclass 186 or 187 visa after you have met the requirements of your subclass 482 visa stream;
  • Sponsor eligible family members for permanent residence (if you are applying under the labour agreement stream).

Who Can Apply for Temporary Skill Shortage Visa?

The subclass 482 visa is available to skilled workers who have been nominated by an approved business to work in an occupation that is on the temporary skill shortage visa occupation list.

To be eligible, you must meet the following temporary skill shortage visa requirements:

  • Be nominated by an approved business to work in an occupation that is on the relevant skilled occupation list;
  • Meet the skills, English language, and work experience requirements for your occupation;
  • Be at least 18 years old when you apply for the visa;
  • Meet health and character requirements;
  • Have adequate health insurance for yourself and any family members who come with you to Australia on this visa;
  • Be willing to sign an Australian values statement;
  • Meet the other requirements of the subclass 482 visa stream you are applying for.

You may also need to have your skills assessed by the relevant assessing authority as being suitable for your occupation.

Additionally, if you are applying for the subclass 482 visa under the short-term or medium-term stream, you must also have your skills assessed by the relevant assessing authority as being suitable for your occupation.

If you are applying for the subclass 482 visa under the labour agreement stream, you will need to provide evidence that you have been nominated by an employer who has a labour agreement with the Australian government.

How to Apply for Temporary Skill Shortage Visa in Australia?

Before you apply for an Australian temporary skill shortage visa, an approved business must nominate you. The business will lodge a valid nomination application with the Department of Home Affairs.

Once the business has lodged the nomination application and it has been approved, they will need to provide you with a Confirmation of Nomination Certificate. You will need to provide this certificate when you lodge your visa application.

To apply for the subclass 482 visa you will also need to complete an online application form and pay the visa application fee. You will also need to provide supporting documents, such as your passport, birth certificate, and evidence of your skills and qualifications.

You may also need to provide evidence of your English language proficiency, such as results from an IELTS or TOEFL test.
